Syllabus

 

The program schedule is designed to accommodate working practitioners with busy professional schedules. It can be completed in a minimum of 2 years and consists of 3 ongoing modular components:

 

  1. 4 x intensive full week workshops with Nigel, offered each summer and winter (2 per year). Each intensive will focus equally on classroom and clinical training and the total component of this intensive training will be 200hrs  (50 hrs per Intensive)

  2. 4 x weekend review and new material presentation workshops offered each spring and fall (at 6 month intervals between Nigel's Intensives). This modular component will total 64 hrs (16 per weekend)

  3. 16 x webinar sessions of 6 hrs each (total 96 hrs) with Nigel spread over the 2 years in between the Intensives and the weekend workshops

 

 

 

Module #1

Pre-requesitie for all other modules.

Offers broad intro to the history and clinical practice of Kampo in terms of diagnostic methods and evaluation, formula prescribing and follow-up, pharmacy management and product issues, safety and ethics.

Basic Kampo theory including patient constitution and pattern analysis will be discussed as well as the Qi / Water / Blood paradigm in pathophysiology which characterizes both diagnostic language and formula actions in Kampo.

 

Module #2

Fukushin placatory methodology and evaluation.

Matching of Classical formulas with specific abdominal conformations (about 25 Classical formulas covered)

The role of abdominal palpation in constitutional assessment as well as formula pattern ID

 

Module#3

Formula SHO (clinical evidence) characterizing and differentiating the clinical application of each classical formula from the Shang han Lun

Combining patient constitution and pattern analysis in determining nature, etiology, progression, and prognosis of illness in each stage.

40 or so formulas will be examined from these perspectives in the clinical setting covering dieases, acute or chronic, that may have at some time had an active microbial agent provocateur.

 

Module #4 

Formula SHO (clinical evidence) characterizing and differentiating the clinical application of each classical formula from the Jing Gui Yao Lue in the same manner as in #3 above.

An additional 30 or so formulas will be studied in terms of their clinical application in internal medicine particularly in regard to functional issues and degenerative changes within the body / mind.

Unique Japanese formulas used in Kampo (from the Edo period) and their clinical uses.

Modern Kampo and the integration of biomedical tradition with traditional empiricism - a true model for integrative therapy and the fostering of mutual professional respect between diverse medical traditions.

Legal, ethical and other issues

 

This represents an eventual 360 hour program with #1 as pre-requisite to the others and #2-#5 to be taken in any particle order. 

This is a  substantial undertaking but it is one I have found can promise to produce a competent clinical herbalist at the end of the 360 hrs.
